Is Lewes beach safe to swim?

Today, the Delaware Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) issued a water alert for Lewes, Broadkill, and Slaughter beaches. Near swimming beaches, the water is sampled on a regular weekly basis and again after any significant rainfall. The following information, which was taken from the DNREC website concerning their monitoring, is as follows: It is also essential to keep in mind that swimming is not permitted in the inland bays at any time of the day or night.

  • The Recreational Water Program run by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control provides a variety of safeguards to the swimmers who participate in it.
  • Surveys of the shorelines immediately next to patrolled recreational beaches are carried out with the purpose of locating all actual and prospective sources of pollution.

During the hours when lifeguards are on duty, water samples are taken at each of the beaches under their watch at least once every week (mid May through Labor Day). The quantities of Enterococci bacteria in recreational waterways are determined by conducting an analysis on water samples taken from such waters.

  • Enterococcus is one of numerous indicator organisms that signify the presence of potentially hazardous bacteria and viruses.
  • Other indicator organisms include streptococcus and coliform bacteria.
  • At popular public access spots near Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay, signs have been put to warn potential swimmers of the hazards connected with swimming in waters of poor quality.

These bays are all located in the vicinity of Delaware. The Department of Health and Human Services suggests that you only swim at beaches that are patrolled by lifeguards and where water samples are taken regularly. A warning should always be heeded before entering the water in any of the Inland Bays.

Nutrient contamination is a problem in the Inland Bays, and it comes from a variety of sources, including malfunctioning septic systems, fertilizers, and other products. Because the water in three bays, Indian River Bay, Rehoboth Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay, moves slowly through the system, contaminants are allowed to accumulate.

Do you have to pay to go to Lewes beach?

Detailed Reviews: The ranking of the reviews is determined by the descriptiveness of user-identified themes such as the general suggestions and location information as well as the cleanliness of the establishment. dem7800 Williamsburg, VA 99 contributions Family Stunningly beautiful for such a little beach.

  1. To park, you will need to provide payment.
  2. You are required to insert your license plate into a central meter that accepts payment in the form of money, credit cards, or mobile apps.
  3. They are quite serious about making payments! Because of this, they are able to generate income for the community, thus it is imperative that you pay.

Alright, enough with that. The bay is actually the ocean. Because there are no waves, it is an ideal place for younger children to play. The sand isn’t too difficult to walk on, and there are mats available to help persons who have problems with their stride.

  • The showers and facilities were clean to a satisfactory degree.
  • In addition to that, they have a little concession stand.
  • The prices were about par for the course in this region.
  • Our day at the beach was made even more enjoyable by the steady wind.

  2. Donations received from Judy M Wayne, PA 696 Due to the fact that we were in town for the Lewes Garden Tour, we made the decision to spend the first afternoon of our three-day trip at one of the local beaches.
  3. A word of caution: before feeding the parking meter, you need to have your license plate number memorized.

The purchase was attempted to be canceled by my husband so that he could return to the vehicle and get the license plate number; however, he had already entered the credit card information while inadvertently keying XX. Even though he knew this was the wrong license plate information, he still pushed the cancel button, but the purchase was already finalized and a receipt for the money was sent.

  1. When we got back, we saw a ticket for thirty dollars even though we had just remained for an hour.
  2. Therefore, the next morning, both of us got in our cars and drove to the local police station, where we told our tale to two members of the parking authority and their assistant.
  3. They dropped the fine that they were going to charge us for giving the wrong information about our license plate number to the parking lot kiosk to the amount of $10 after some discussion of the situation.

Too unbelievable! Therefore, our stay on a beach cost us $15 for an hour, but our trip to this picturesque village on the bay cost us many, many hundreds of dollars over the course of three days. The entirety of the statement that we got from the Lewes Parking Authority sticks out in the forefront of our thoughts, and it’s really rather terrible that this is the case.

Remember your license plate numbers if you’re traveling from another state, as one group of elderly folks who obey the law strongly recommends doing so. During the summer of 2021, we paid this beach many visits during the course of that season. We enjoyed some wonderful times with our guests. From Memorial Day until the end of the summer, lifeguards are on duty. When the tide was low, we took advantage of the opportunity to play on the newly constructed islands.

  1. We discovered a wide variety of marine life including hermit crabs, calico crabs, clams, and conches here.
  2. It was a gorgeous day, and there were no waves.
  3. On days when the tide was high, we did not have any islands; nevertheless, the water was deeper, and the children were able to play in the somewhat deeper water and construct sand castles on the beach.

During each excursion, we combed the coastline for seashells to add to our collection. You will discover a great number of tiny shells (clam, scallops, lady slippers, etc). Sand is really gentle. This beach offers a fantastic vantage point from which to observe the arrival and departure of the boat from the harbor.

  • In general, we had a good time at Lewes Beach throughout our trips there.
  • Since this is a bay beach, there are very few, if any, waves here.
  • The surf were rather calm even on the day when an intense storm was developing offshore.
  • It is secure enough for use by households with young children.
  • This beach has a total of two parking lots available for visitors.

BOTH are metered. The hourly charge is around $2, and payment may be made by either downloading the ParkMobile app or inserting a credit card at the main parking meter. One bath building and two separate sets of restrooms are available. Outside, close to the buildings housing the flush toilets, there are sprinklers that can be used to clean off in.

  1. In the event that you find yourself in need of something to eat or drink, there is a DQ within walking distance in addition to a Lions Club Snack Shack that is located on the border of the parking lot.
  2. I would suggest going there IF you are looking for a beach where you can lie out or one that has very few or no waves.

If you want to boogie board, you should choose another beach because this one is not the right one for you. Written September 22, 2021 This review represents the individual viewpoint of a Tripadvisor member and does not reflect the views of Tripadvisor LLC.

  2. I was given a parking penalty for thirty dollars because I had parked in the incorrect way despite the fact that there was no signage!! Ridiculous, there wasn’t even a warning given! It’s bad enough that you have to pay to park in order to be able to spend money in their businesses; on top of that, you have to park facing the correct way! It would have been good to have been warned.

WAY TOO EXPENSIVE AND NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. Written September 20, 2021 This review represents the individual viewpoint of a Tripadvisor member and does not reflect the views of Tripadvisor LLC. Because of the beach’s location near the mouth of Delaware Bay, the waves were relatively mild, making swimming an enjoyable and risk-free activity.

The beach in Lewes is one of the best in the area. Very sanitary, with easily accessible changing and restroom areas. Large enough for you to relax, sprawl out, and enjoy the day in complete safety. Which beach is better Rehoboth or Ocean City?

Local Flgiht Ocean City MD to Lewes DE

Ocean City, Maryland in Contrast to the Beaches of Delaware – QUESTION Trying to determine if Ocean City, Maryland or the resort beach towns in Delaware is the better option for you? There are several factors to take into account. Are there a lot of people at the beaches? What kind of eating experiences do you look forward to the most? Is there trash on the beach, and are there lifeguards on duty? How would you rate the quality of the water? Restrooms in the neighborhood? Is there a boardwalk and can you get meals at the beach? Is there anything I can do with the children here? Is there a lot of surf, and is the beach easy to walk on? What are the typical conditions and temperatures of the ocean? Here is some input from seasoned travelers that has not been influenced in any way.

  • Comparison between Ocean City and the Delaware Beaches according to the Tape Concerning: Ocean City vs.
  • the Beaches of Delaware Even though the beaches in Delaware are stunning, I would like spend time in Ocean City, Maryland.
  • At the northern end of Orange County, you’ll discover a greater concentration of high-rise condominiums and a lower level of activity.

You actually do not need to drive from place to place since Ocean City has buses that carry you all around for a very cheap day cost, and they take you everywhere. The Boardwalk Tram is another one of my favorites since not only is it reasonably priced but also many children like taking it.

  1. Consequently, I have a preference for Ocean City.
  2. There are plenty of kid-friendly activities, such as mini golf and other amusements, and the environment is spotless and secure.
  3. Ocean City in Maryland Boardwalk Concerning: Ocean City vs.
  4. the Beaches of Delaware OC is a massive beach town that also has a lot of excitement.

Although Ocean City is a favorite among young people, some adults believe that the town is too commercial, too rowdy, and too noisy. Ocean City offers a bigger variety of lodging options, a greater number of attractions, beaches that are wider, a boardwalk that is longer, etc.

  1. It’s a much bigger resort area with hotels and condominiums along the streets for blocks and blocks.
  2. There are just a handful of hotels, cottages and other types of vacation rentals in Rehoboth, some of which are located within a short walking distance of the beach.
  3. I would suggest checking at Delaware beaches for a vacation rental if that is what you are looking for.

For my perspective, Orange County is a bit too touristic and congested at times. The beaches in Delaware are noticeably more sophisticated, in addition to being more peaceful and suitable for families. My vote goes to Delaware, and I’ll keep sending folks to Ocean City so that Bethany and Rehoboth may maintain their status as quaint, low-key communities.

You should also consider Fenwick Island, as it is the first beach town in Delaware and is located on the border between Delaware and Maryland. The hotel is charming, clean, and welcoming to families with children. Concerning: Ocean City vs. the Beaches of Delaware The length of Ocean City is nine miles, and the boardwalk extends all the way to 27th street from the inlet.

The volume of vehicles moving through the roadway is often high, yet the flow of traffic is not impeded by the synchronization of the stoplights. In my perspective, the nine miles have a lower population density than the region along the Coastal Highway in Delaware.

  1. It is also important to know that all nine miles of Ocean City have been developed.
  2. It is not necessary to travel more than one mile from your position in Ocean City in order to reach a range of good restaurants, amusements, attractions, and loads of things for children to do in Ocean City, Maryland.

Concerning: Ocean City vs. the Beaches of Delaware I would suggest Rehoboth Beach or Bethany for families with younger children. They each feature beaches and boardwalks that are of the highest quality. The boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach is considerably less expansive.

  1. The cuisine in Rehoboth is more refined, whereas Delaware is known for its tax-free shopping.
  2. Check out Bethany Beach as well; it’s conveniently located in the middle of Rehoboth and Ocean City.
  3. It is really peaceful, and it caters very well to families.
  4. It has a fantastic boardwalk and beach.
  5. It would be a mistake to miss Fenwick Island’s beaches because they are attractive and well maintained.

In general, there are many alternatives available to you, and you are already at the beach; where else would you rather be? Concerning: Ocean City vs. the Beaches of Delaware I would suggest Bethany Beach or Fenwick Island to families with small children.

  1. Ocean City is easily accessible from both of these locations and makes for an excellent day trip destination.
  2. The affluent and highly expensive town of Rehoboth Beach located in Delaware.
  3. In Orange County, there is a wide range of entertainment options available for both younger children and adolescents.

While parking in Rehoboth and Bethany is difficult and expensive, parking in Ocean City is significantly more convenient. Because of its reputation as a party destination and its abundance of people in their twenties as well as beach bars, Dewey Beach is not the ideal destination for vacations with young families.

It is, however, located close south of Rehoboth. Have fun on your trip regardless of where you end up going. It is the ideal location for a young person since Bethany Beach has a classic boardwalk that is lined with beach stores and delicious food. Bethany Beach is also a good area to unwind and relax.

Your ultimate choice will be determined by the activities and pursuits that are most satisfying to you. If you want to have the most memorable vacation possible, you need to make an informed decision about the sort of beach you want to visit. Can you swim at Lewes beach?

Swimming, fishing, boating, and a variety of other water sports are all available at the bay and ocean beaches located in and around Lewes, Delaware. Both Savannah Beach (previously known as Beach 1) and Johnnie Walker Beach (formerly known as Beach 2), which are both accessible through Cape Henlopen Drive, provide lifeguarded swimming from the Memorial Day weekend through the Labor Day weekend.

Does Lewes beach have waves?

Because Lewes is located on a bay, there are very few waves to speak about in the area. Because the beach is so rough and also contains a lot of trash like concrete blocks and underwater jetties, wading there can be a bit of an unpleasant experience.
